Nine business reporters/correspondence will from February 22-25 converged on Abuja at the instance of Internews Nigeria 's Local Voices Project.
The journalists have been invited from eight Radio station in Lagos, Kano and Abuja for the week long training with theme: "The Business of ARV Procurement and Distribution".
According to Internews the workshop was planned to prompt a shift from the perception that generally sees HIV/AIDS as just a health Issue.
Josephine Kamara, Resident Advisor of Internews says the training will Begin a process to assist the media to begin to mainstream HIV/AIDS reporting in Nigeria . "Since HIV/AIDS is not just a health issue it's an economic issue, an education issue, affecting virtually every sector, every reporter in the newsroom should be able to comfortably report on the issues in a manner that shows its impact on their different areas of reporting," Kamara said.
Reporters on the training will have access to information on the challenges of procuring and distributing anti-retrovirals (ARVs) to the 25 designated ARV treatment centers across the country. They will also learn about plans to ensure that the free treatment policy introduced this year by the government of Nigeria does not suffer any hitch.
The training will also focus on honing skills in radio script writing, interviewing techniques, use of digital editing software and the mini disc recorder.
"By the end of the workshop, our aim is to have these reporters write accurate, well-researched HIV/AIDS story from the perspective of a business reporter," Kamara said.
