Kwara state commissioner for Health, Dr. Femi Ogunsola disclosed that the 4.3 % prevalence rate recorded in the state in 2001 has reduced to less than 2.7% in 2006.
To achieve this figure, Ogunsola said that the Ministry targeted such transit spots as Eyenkorin, Bode Sa'adu and other location in the state for campaign on causes and prevention of the disease.
"Infact, our recent report presented to the relevant authority in Abuja, put the present percentage of people living with the disease at 2.7 per cent. And we know, by now, it would have reduced again."
He said the state would not relent in its efforts until the state becomes free from HIV/AIDS. Ogunsola was however silent on the approach and methods used to arrive at the figure given that the number of Nigerians living with HIV/AIDS is now over 6million in the current statistics released in January 2006, almost doubling the earlier figure that was under 4million.
